Causes of the cold war:Predicting Long-Term Issues

Today's class will focus on the causes of the cold war. By analyzing several primary documents, reading a short DBQ essay, and viewing some of the film Fallout, we will understand the causes and predict long term effects of the cold war.

Here is the question:

Do you agree or disagree with the essay in the DBQ reading regarding the causes of the cold war? What evidence do you have to support your agreement or disagreement? Which points are valid and which are not? Be sure to comment on and connect to your peers' posts and challenge their assertions.

Q: Do you agree or disagree with the essay in the DBQ reading regarding the causes of the cold war? What evidence do you have to support your agreement or disagreement? Which points are valid and which are not? Be sure to comment on and connect to your peers' posts and challenge their assertions.

A: I disagree with the DBQ reading because the author makes it seem like the U.S. was trying to make Russia jealous. It also made it seem like we had a part in enforcing. The essay said, "The U.S. had no strategic advantage in aiding the Koreans except to contain Communism." This quote is really degrading the United States as a whole. The author has an invalid stateent haere that says that Hitler was a Communist when he indeed was not. The valid information was that, "The U.S. fight against Communism and the hatred that it bred in the citizens was the first sign of an emerging war." (Essay) The essay also states that, "...there were numerous social, political, and economic factors that led to the Cold War. Some of these included Communism, paranoia, new policies by America and the Red Block, and many other misconceived notions. These factors led to a war of threats and empty promises, the Cold War." These mean that the Cold War was not just caused by Communism, but by many other problems too. The main point of this essay is to undermine the United States and make it look like the United States was at fault when they were simply trying to keep the peace.

I do agree with many issues with many countries helping to create tentions between the U.S and Russia.Plus the communism in areas such as Eastern Europe and Asia created political, economic, and social dillemas. Some of the events that led the cold war was between the United States and Russia. Also the world war II ocurred whent eh atomic bombs were dropped according to the japanese citizens. The bomb was used to intimidate the soviet union in the cold war. Also the United States communishad begun to struggle to the fact that they wanted to intimidate the communist powers. Communist was also threating and spread bad influence in the world. I think that i do not agree with this essay questions due to the fact thatthis fear led the United States to take economic measures againts communism.

I disagree witth the DBQ essay because the quote gives america a bad image. For example, it made it look like we supported Russia and also communism when we reallly did not even agree with communism. If we agreed with communism don't you think that is what type of society we would have today??? The reasons i believe that the DBQ essay is because Russians made it seem as if it was us that started the cold war when in all actuality we were just trying to mediate the problem and not even go to war. I believe that it was a misunderstanding that led to cold war

i disagree because it made it seems like America was trying to bully russia into surrendering. I just think that America was trying to protect itself and its people and by doing so made other countrys scared and aware of Americas power. a qoute i got was "These factors led to a war of threats and empty promises, the Cold War." this ment that the cold war was strted and progressed by promises unfulfilled and bomb threats and bomb sraces that is why i disagree with this reading.-Dexter Middleton

i agree in some terms for what the essay siad. america was trying to spread its influence but in a different and less violent way. also hitler ans stalin had 2 different styles of government, stalin had communism, while hitler had fascism. also the article about the japanese citizen commenting on the bomb's dropped to frighten the soviets, was kind of unnessesary. i would suspect a russian to say that, not a citizen whose country got totalled and two a-bombs were dropped on. they still had an emperor, who are they to say what america is thinking and doing with our stuff. honestly, an isolationist country, without communism commenting on us, crazy.

i would say that i agree with Alexis when it comes to disagreeing the essay given in class. the reseon why i say that is becouse they had a whole paragraph on how they thought they ameerica was just using the atomic bomb to show-off to the soviets.l the reseon why i disagree is beocuse i beleive that we were truying to become more power ull and to beocme better when it came to war. at that time we did not have much power in the world, and a nuclear bomb would of been the way that we could move up. i also think that it true that we were trying to stop the pointless war that was happining at the time. the bomb that was mad stopped millions of people from being killed, even though it did kill so many peope in the first place.
also the entire last paragraph of that essay is negative, it doesent show anything good about what america was trying to do. "Another action against Communism was NATO. Formed by European and North American countries, "the parties agreed that an attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America, shall be considered an attack against them all." that was not a bad thinig in my oppinion becouse in order to be powerfull you need to have a group of countries to have your back. you cant just exspect that becouse you have nuclear power that you are going to be able to kill the entire population.

I totally disagree with the DBQ reading because the essay is saying that America trying to bully Russia and that's not the case. America was trying to tell Russia that all of this "Cold War" isn't necessary. They weren't trying to make it seem that we are antsy or anything and I guess this is maybe the reason why we got into that war in the first place. Russians are mean and cruel and I hate them and their accents.... lol

I don't agree with the DBQ reading because they makes it seem like the U.S. was trying to make Russia jealous and we wasn't. they also make it seem like we were trying to enforce. The essay stated, "The U.S. had no strategic advantage in aiding the Koreans except to contain Communism." This quote means it is really degrading the United States altogether. The author even error because he said that hitler was a communists and he definitely wasn't. The truth was that the U.S. faught against Communism and because the citizens hate that, that was the first sign of an emerging war. it also says that there were a lot of social, political, and economic factors that led to the Cold War. The factors led to a war of threats and empty promises, the Cold War. This means that the Cold War was not just led by Communism, but by other problems too. The main thing about this is to undermine the United States and make it look like the United States was at fault when they were trying to keep peace.

I agree with the essay because some of the political issues with the other countries brought tension to the us and russia. With our concerns on hitler stalin and dictators comunism were taking over the world. the power put behind these alliances made a slight chance that they would be unable to fight communism. Also there were numerous social, political, and economic factors that led to the Cold War.

i disargee with the essay because in the essay it takes about hitler being a comunist. when in fact he is not a comunist. also it made it look like we were helping people in korea to make the russian upset when in fact the packet was mad at america for doing it and not tryng to make the russians angry. also it made it seem that communism was the only factor in the coldwar when in fact it was not the only reason.

I agree with the DBQ essay because America knew that what they had invented was all mighty and powerfull and they knew that all of the other countries would be intimidated by their power. If any county had commen sence they would know not to mess with america after what happened with heroshema and nagasaki. But at the same time they would be inspiering other countries like russian to also invent somthing of equal power and would want to supass America. I believe that America knew this would happen, but was just ignoring the possibility.

I diagree with the DBQ reading because the author has potrayed the U.S trying to make Russia to be mad at us. However it has also included a quote from the reading "The U.S had no strategic advantage in aiding the Koreans expect to contain Communsim." That quote is making the U.S look bad on their part. We are part of the country and the way that it would look on us. What i think is that the cold war was not only caused by Communism but it also had other factors of it. The reading's message was to give people to picture in their minds that the U.S was the cause of the cold war, but what they do not understand is that we were making an effort to also help. The information in the reading is making it look like the U.S is a bad place and that we were the cause of the cold war

i agree with some of the documents in the DBQ. for instace document B says that "The soviet rulers prefer that the free nations be weak and divided." this makes sense because it would be easier for countries to take over others if the they're is not sticking together since it makes the people more vulnerable. However i don't agree with document G where it implies that comunism is a bad thing poisons the whole world. for some people communism might work. of course it was a cause of the cold war and people were scared but i don't think that it poisons the whole world if theres just one or two communist countries.

Yes i agree with the fact that many countries caused the cold war to happen. Everyone had took this as self defence thats why they decided to fight back with guns and nuclear weapons. This is like the time when hiroshima had got bombed by the Russians. The nuclear bomb wounded many people in the city hiroshima. But i dont agree with the fact that the people wanted to bring heavy weapons to the battle. In the cold war there was communism going around the world causing alot people to fight for really dumm reasons. They tryed to restore and maintain the peace and security at a balanced level.

I do not agree with DBQ's essay i do not think that America was really wrong. I think that he made it seem as though america was trying to make Russia surrender and trying to scare them when that was not are plan at all. They tried to make it seem like america were the ones at fualt because we started the war when in all actuality we did not we were trying to mediate. But either way the Cold war were simply threats and unmade promises that did not lead to any fighting. I also think the US was right for wanting to containe a flawed government (communism) that if spreaded could be very bad for the world.

I disagree with the DBQ essay because in fact this essay makes it seem like America is worse than I actually is. This essay does in fact make it seem like America supports communism when in reality things would indeed be different then they actually were. It states that, “Some of these included Communism, paranoia, new policies by America and the Red Block, and many other misconceived notions. These factors led to a war of threats and empty promises, the Cold War”. By it saying this it makes me think that people were just paranoid that communism was going to spread all over the world. But the fact of the matter is, is that communism never really did not 100% spread around the world. Which is why it makes me disagree with the causes that are mentioned in this essay.

Yes i do agreee with the DBQ reading because it was Stalin's fault why cold war started between him and hitler. Also, Roosevelt never told the public about what was going on...

I disagree. The essay said how America was making big bombs just to show off. We made them for our oun protection not just to show off. We made the bomb to stop the war and saved millions of our lives. We did kill millions of others but saved our selfs. This sounds bad but most people would save themselves before they'd save a stranger. And when they criticized NATO they are not being smart. If you are a single country all u need is to be nuked once but if you have 5 countries that have your back you will be all set the other country will be blown into a million pieces before it bombs all 5 countries.

I agree with what the essay says in the third and fourth paragraph about government. America didnt like communism and thought that they were so smart and knew better to say that democracy was better. they should have just worried about making sure america wasnt communist and left the other countries alone. in the second paragraph

I agree because the quote gives america a bad image. Example we made it look like we suported russia when we really did not agree with them. I think that it was a misunderstanding that led to the cold war.
